Solo musician Allie Goertz, known to her fans for her satirical songs, wit and incredibly touching vocals, is back with the album ‘Peeled Back’. The new record began life as a Kickstarter funded project, a cover album of Nine Inch Nails songs, and met its goal within 6 hours of launch. This is a testament to not only the trust her fans have in her music and keenness to hear more, but how valued her reimaginings and interpretations of popular culture are.

‘Peeled Back’ is not a parody album, instead it is a study of fifteen Nine Inch Nails through the Allie Goertz musical lens. She clearly has a deep appreciation of these songs, recognising the subtleties and also wryness in some of the lyrics. It is absolutely beautiful and perfectly showcases her gorgeous song composition and stylings.

Fragile and delicate vocals combined with the force of the lyrics creates something very powerful. It’s incredible listening to the storytelling behind ‘Piggy’ and feeling the anger and frustration in the lyrics, hearing in the words the decision to move on, to it becoming a care-free, cool, beachy vibe of a song. ‘Piggy’ could be mistaken for an Angus and Julia Stone or Zero 7 song, absolutely amazing.

While not a traditional covers album, ‘Peeled Back’ certainly creates this incredibly adventurous feel throughout. Allie Goertz has not just paid homage to one of her more beloved acts, but reinvented them to create this beautifully warm and embracing listening experience.
