Bristol-based artist Sam Jackson, better known as Einsam, continues his journey into the electronic intersection of post-punk and indie-pop with the release of his second single, ‘Motivation’, from his ‘Actionism’ EP. After spending four years in Vienna, Jackson returned to Bristol to shape his solo project, with the aptly chosen name Einsam, which translates to “solitary” in German. This word perfectly captures the essence of his introspective and experimental work, blending philosophical themes with the driving energy of pop.

‘Motivation’ stands as a compelling highlight from ‘Actionism’, delving into the life of boxer Floyd Patterson, once the youngest heavyweight champion, later known for his numerous knockdowns in the ring. Patterson’s resilience, his ability to rise again despite being called “The Loser,” forms the emotional core of the track. Jackson’s fascination with Patterson, sparked by reading Muhammad Ali’s biography and further fueled by Gay Talese’s poignant article on the boxer, led to a deeply layered and reflective song. This narrative ties seamlessly into Jackson’s exploration of the human condition, connecting Patterson’s physical battles to the existential themes explored by philosopher Karl Jaspers, particularly the concept of Grenzsituation- moments where individuals confront their limitations.

Musically, ‘Motivation’ contrasts raw vulnerability with bursts of grandeur. Jackson’s low, singular vocal delivery in the verses gradually rises into a powerful chorus, with swelling snares and brass-like synths underscoring the refrain, “it’s only motivation to go harder.” The track encapsulates both the personal struggle and triumph that come with perseverance, fittingly mirroring Patterson’s life in the ring.

The comforting synth-driven sounds and lush, velvety soundscape gives the feeling of the listener being enveloped in a nostalgic embrace. From the very first note, it exudes a warmth that feels both familiar and inviting, like stepping into a cherished memory. The rich, analogue textures of the synths create an atmosphere that is undeniably soothing, wrapping around the listener with a gentle presence. Each layer of sound seems to radiate a soft glow, capturing the essence of beloved electronic influences while still feeling refreshingly modern.

The way the song builds evokes a sense of closeness, as if the music itself is reaching out to offer safety and solace. The warm, resonant tones of the synths are reminiscent of the golden era of pop, blending smooth melodies with a subtle, uplifting pulse that feels comforting and reassuring. The track’s production expertly balances this nostalgic warmth with a contemporary finesse, elevating it into something intimate and heartfelt.

‘Motivation’ truly cements Einsam as an artist unafraid to dig deep into the complexities of human existence, all while delivering tracks that resonate both emotionally and sonically.
