Ian Vargo’s newest release ‘Surfboard’ is a breezy homage to endless summer days, as well as a heartfelt postcard from a father to his daughter, wrapped in lush harmonies and sun-bleached nostalgia.

‘Surfboard’ glows with the warmth of classic West Coast pop, tipping its hat to the legacy of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys without ever feeling like mere pastiche. Vargo, a seasoned producer and songwriter known for his work with heavy-hitting labels like Capitol and EMI, crafts this track with meticulous care: layered vocals drift like ocean mist, shimmering piano chords evoke late afternoons by the shore, and the unmistakable shimmer of retro guitars roll in like gentle waves.

What makes ‘Surfboard’ especially moving is its origin story. Sparked by an offhand request from his eight-year-old daughter to write her a song by that name, Vargo turned what could have been a simple father-daughter moment into a deeply personal reflection on parenthood and impermanence. Lyrics like “Just remember my face as smiling” reveal the bittersweet undercurrent beneath the sunny exterior, the realisation that children grow up, and those shared moments on the beach (or in the living room) are fleeting.

The track’s affectionate details extend beyond the music itself. The cover art, painted by Vargo’s father Kurt, depicts a father and daughter gazing toward the ocean, a tender generational thread woven through the project.

Though he’s established himself as an engineer and educator, with credits ranging from Disney to Atlantic and a following among gearheads on The Pro Audio Files, ‘Surfboard’ shows another side of Vargo: the devoted dad, the daydreamer, and the artist unafraid to show vulnerability.

As summer dawns, ‘Surfboard’ offers a shimmering, soul-soaked soundtrack for anyone who’s ever watched someone they love grow up too fast, a radiant invitation to savour every fleeting second.
