Some albums feel engineered for headphones, while others feel destined for crowded dancefloors, open windows, and late-night drives through neon-lit streets. And with their newest album ‘Keep Shining’, Amsterdam quartet Lemon deliver a vibrant, groove-heavy record that captures the electrifying feeling of music as both escape and celebration.
At the heart of the band are four longtime companions: bassist and vocalist Mark “Bong The Bass” Bongers, multi-instrumentalist Thomas Gense, drummer Paul Hesen, and guitarist Ralf Hesen. Their history together translates into a natural chemistry that runs through every moment of the album. Rather than sounding assembled in a studio, the music feels alive, loose, and deeply connected.
Musically, ‘Keep Shining’ is a joyful collision of styles. The record blends guitar-driven indie energy with danceable rhythms, psychedelic textures, and soulful undertones. The result is a sound that nods to classic British alternative dance culture while still feeling distinctly European and modern.
The band refer to their style as “Nedchester,” a playful twist on the euphoric sound that once defined Manchester’s late-80s club scene. That influence is certainly present, but Lemon expand the formula with elements of shoegaze haze, pop melody, and funk-infused rhythm.

The album thrives on momentum. Songs glide from hazy introspection into uplifting choruses, creating an emotional lift that mirrors the communal energy of a packed live show. The track ‘Let It Out!’ bursts forward with infectious rhythm and bright guitar work, while ‘Power’ channels a more expansive atmosphere, building layers of melody and groove into something almost anthemic.
Guest vocal appearances from Cath Coffey of Stereo MC’s and Dutch singer Yasmina van Gurp add extra colour to the album’s palette. Their contributions enrich the record’s collaborative spirit and reinforce the feeling that this is music built on connection.
Recorded in Amsterdam’s Quark Studios with producer Tim Egmond, the band chose to capture much of the instrumentation together in the room. That approach preserves the spontaneous energy that defines the album, with every drum hit, bass groove, and guitar line locking into place with organic warmth.
Ultimately, ‘Keep Shining’ feels like a celebration of music’s ability to bring people together. Lemon craft songs that shimmer with rhythm, melody, and genuine joy that reminds you why dancing to loud guitars and hypnotic beats never gets old.
