RIOT SON’s ‘My Love Is A Promise That I Can’t Keep’ is an EP built on atmosphere as much as emotion. Emerging from Boone, North Carolina, the project continues what the artist describes as “Appalachian Gloom,” a sound that blends post-punk melancholy, dream-pop textures and emotionally direct songwriting into something immersive yet deeply personal.
Across its three tracks, the EP explores loneliness, emotional exhaustion, and the possibility of renewal without becoming overly theatrical. There is a restraint to the writing that allows the mood to develop naturally, helped by production that prioritises texture and space over sheer intensity.
The closing track, ‘Slowly Without You’, serves as the project’s emotional centrepiece. Written during late-night drives through the Blue Ridge Parkway, the song gradually unfolds from distant, subdued verses into a heavier, more emotionally exposed climax before retreating into a hushed conclusion.
But one of the project’s strongest qualities is its attention to detail. RIOT SON’s layered vocal approach, created using both a vintage Shere O Dyne microphone and a modern condenser setup, gives the songs a spacious, almost ghostly quality. Reverb and stereo movement are used carefully, creating depth without overwhelming the core melodies. There are shades of The Cure and Beach House in the atmosphere, though the project never feels overly indebted to any single influence.
What ultimately gives ‘My Love Is A Promise That I Can’t Keep’ its impact is its sincerity. Throughout the EP, RIOT SON approaches these songs as reflections of lived experience. It feels grounded in personal uncertainty and emotional rebuilding, but it also leaves room for warmth and recovery beneath the darker tones.
RIOT SON has already established a clear identity on previous releases, but this one that connects rural isolation with modern alternative production in a way that feels thoughtful throughout. The result is an understated but compelling example of an artist with a strong sense of atmosphere, emotional clarity, and direction.
