Reinvention is rarely as convincing as artists hope it will be. Too often, a new direction feels more like a cosmetic adjustment than a genuine creative evolution. But on her latest offering ‘Magi’, Finnish artist Lotta Svart makes a compelling case for her latest chapter, unveiling a sound that feels both deeply personal and refreshingly distinct from the projects that first introduced her to audiences.
Having previously operated within more conventional pop frameworks, she now steps into terrain she describes as “melodic electropoetry”, a fitting term for music that prioritises atmosphere, texture, and emotional nuance as much as melody itself. While labels can sometimes feel forced, ‘Magi’ largely justifies the description.
Built around shimmering electronic pulses and layered vocal arrangements, the single unfolds with remarkable patience. Throughout, she allows the song to breathe, creating an environment we can inhabit, resulting in something that feels closer to an immersive experience than anything else.
The production, co-crafted with Sam Sonntag, deserves particular praise. Delicate electronic textures drift in and out of focus while organic elements soften the track’s digital edges, creating a soundscape that feels simultaneously modern and timeless. There are moments where the arrangement threatens to become too ethereal for its own good, hovering close to ambient territory, but the rhythmic undercurrent consistently pulls it back into focus.

Vocally, Svart delivers one of the track’s strongest assets. Her performance draws us inward through intimacy, allowing emotion to emerge through tone and phrasing rather than volume alone. The Swedish-language delivery also further enhances the song’s atmosphere, adding another layer of warmth and mystery for international audiences.
As the opening chapter of a larger body of work, the single succeeds in establishing a clear artistic identity and intriguing creative direction. More importantly, it feels authentic as Lotta Svart appears to have found a space uniquely her own.
‘Magi’ may be built around softness and vulnerability, but beneath its dreamlike surface lies an artist displaying considerable creative confidence. If this single is any indication, her journey into melodic electropoetry is off to a quietly captivating start.
