There’s a particular kind of optimism that only great music seems capable of delivering. It’s that stubborn belief that movement itself can become a form of resistance, and that spirit sits at the centre of Metagirl & the Earth Passengers’ new single ‘Fire It Up’, a track that refuses to surrender to cynicism even while acknowledging how easy it would be to do exactly that.

The Brooklyn collective, led by Erica Rowell, has spent years carving out a sound that comfortably sidesteps easy categorisation, and ‘Fire It Up’ continues that tradition. The song pulls from the energy of punk, the bounce of ska and the melodic instincts of classic power-pop without ever feeling like an exercise in revivalism. Instead, these ingredients are folded together into something lively, immediate and unmistakably contemporary.

Throughout, the track moves with restless purpose, propelled by sharp guitar work and an infectious groove that feels designed to keep us in motion. There’s an undeniable debt to the two-tone tradition running through its DNA, but there are also flashes of indie-rock swagger and garage-band looseness that stop it from becoming overly polished.

Production from Andros Rodriguez provides clarity without sanding away the rougher edges that make the song work. Every instrument has room to breathe, allowing the guitars, rhythms and vocal melodies to push against each other naturally while maintaining the energy of a live performance.

There are echoes of The Specials, The English Beat and the melodic immediacy of bands like Buzzcocks, but Metagirl & the Earth Passengers are not simply borrowing from established templates. Their music carries a personality that belongs entirely to them, balancing intelligence, humour and emotional directness with impressive ease.

As the second glimpse into the forthcoming ‘Trying to Chalk the Sun’ EP, ‘Fire It Up’ suggests a band growing increasingly confident in its identity. It captures frustration without becoming consumed by it and finds momentum where others might settle for despair. And sometimes that’s enough.
