Some relationships end because something went wrong, while others never properly begin because, despite every encouraging sign, the necessary feeling simply fails to arrive. And on his new offering ‘You Deserve Better Than Me’, Melbourne artist Reetoxa explores that quieter disappointment: meeting somebody generous and compatible, then recognising that continuing would be more harmful than walking away.
The single emerged from an apparently promising Tinder date involving shared musical interests, Mexican food and an evening at Arcadia Bar in South Yarra. Conversation had flowed beforehand, common ground was easy to find and the person sitting opposite songwriter Jason McKee seemed entirely deserving of affection. The difficulty was that compatibility didn’t develop into chemistry.
There’s a certain sadness in doing the considerate thing. Popular songs frequently celebrate the intensity of pursuit or document the devastation of abandonment, but fewer examine the restrained guilt of turning away from somebody who has done nothing wrong. ‘You Deserve Better Than Me’ occupies that uncomfortable space with notable directness.
Musically, ‘You Deserve Better Than Me’ provides a gentler passage within Reetoxa’s expansive double album ‘Soliloquy’. Described as a soothing ballad amid more intense material, it offers space for reflection rather than escalating the surrounding record’s emotional pressure.
The recording features a highly experienced group of Australian musicians. Peter Marin provides drums, James Ryan contributes guitar and Kit Riley plays bass, with Simon Moro producing and McKee handling the vocal, lyrics and underlying song structure. Their experience appears to have allowed the track to develop with unusual speed.
There is no villain in its story and no dramatic betrayal requiring revenge. Instead, there’s a pleasant evening, an emotional imbalance and a difficult choice made before the situation could become dishonest. And that modest scale all becomes part of the track’s immersive appeal.
‘You Deserve Better Than Me’ presents Reetoxa at his most restrained, replacing the intensity associated with parts of ‘Soliloquy’ with a quieter form of vulnerability. It acknowledges that honesty can wound while still being kinder than false hope. And that sometimes the most respectful thing one person can offer another is a truthful goodbye.
