There is always something interesting about hearing a band return to a song because they still believe there is more life inside it. And with the new Barbarian mix of ‘Hard To Leave You’, Liverpool’s RISE revisit a track first released on 2024’s ‘Memories and Possibilities’ EP and push it closer to the force of their live sound.

Where the earlier version leaned more heavily into the band’s layered melodic side, this reworking brings greater urgency to the guitars and rhythm section. Brian Petch’s playing is given more room to cut through, adding grit and movement without disturbing the synth-led character that has long helped distinguish RISE from more conventional melodic rock acts.

Written by Paul Kinley, ‘Hard To Leave You’ sits inside the uncomfortable moment when a relationship may have reached its end, but neither direction feels especially clear. Walking away can seem necessary one minute and impossible the next. But instead of resolving that dilemma for us, the song stays inside the indecision, which gives it more depth than a straightforward breakup narrative.

stayMellow’s vocal performance carries much of that conflict. His range allows the song to move between restraint and larger emotional peaks, while the added aggression of the new mix gives those moments more impact. Instead of sounding reflective from a safe distance, this version feels closer to the point where a decision actually has to be made.

Alex Mahoney’s drums also benefit from the broader sense of momentum, keeping the track pushing forward while Kinley’s keyboards provide the width and melodic detail around the guitars. The production, handled by Rob Whiteley and Kinley at Whitewood Studios, retains the complexity of the band’s established sound without letting the arrangement become overcrowded.

So far, RISE have spent years developing a style where melodic rock, synth textures and occasional progressive instincts can coexist, and ‘Hard To Leave You’ remains recognisably theirs even after being substantially toughened up.

RISE haven’t changed the heart of ‘Hard To Leave You’. They have simply given its uncertainty more volume, more tension and a far sharper edge.
