Ume Gumi, the dynamic rock duo hailing from Kanazawa, Japan, have just unveiled their highly anticipated debut single, ‘Haru‘. Comprised of Yukiko Gray on vocals and percussion, alongside Richard Gray on vocals, guitar, bass, and drums, this husband-and-wife team brings a fresh sound inspired by lo-fi and vintage rock, as well as the nostalgic vibes of the 1960s Showa era.
The accompanying music video, filmed amidst the picturesque cherry blossoms of Kanazawa during springtime, perfectly encapsulates the song’s themes of rejuvenation and appreciation for nature’s beauty. Recorded entirely in Kanazawa, ‘Haru’ was a labour of love for Ume Gumi, with Richard Gray handling production duties. The track reminded me of The Pixies in their mellower moments and there is a truly wonderful lift into the chorus of the song. Both the vocals sit really nicely together as well and blend beautifully.
