In the world of alternative, grungy, garage punk stoner rock, Grunge Norris & the Slackers (GNaTS) have carved out a distinctive niche that’s both raw and refined. Their latest single, ‘Brand New Start,’ released in October 2022, is a testament to their resilience and creative prowess.

Led by the seasoned frontman and guitarist, Grunge Norris, formerly of Youth is Dead, ATAT, and Levyathan, GNaTS burst onto the scene in late 2015, hailing from the southeastern corner of Hertfordshire, England. The band’s unique blend of grunge, alternative, indie, garage punk, and stoner rock caught the attention of the now-defunct indie label, Fast Factory Records of NYC.

You’d like to hope ‘Brand New Start’ arrives as a beacon of hope and a testament to GNaTS’ resilience in the face of challenges… but, does it? The track showcases their signature grungy sound, marrying distorted guitars with Norris’ gritty vocals, while the lyrics resonate disdain, frustration and the oft-asked question… will things be different this time? Showing elements of Nirvana, AIC and Pixies, this is purely a doff of the hat and no pastiche as GNaTS’ have a sound of their own.

The track comes on the heels of ‘Filthy Lucre,’ released in August 2022, both serving as a precursor to their upcoming album scheduled for release in 2024. ‘Brand New Start’ is a sonic palette cleanser, a revitalising but twisted anthem that captures the essence of starting anew after a period of uncertainty and the fear of old patterns repeating.

Grunge Norris & the Slackers maintain their authenticity, delivering a sound that pays homage to their grunge roots while infusing fresh elements. The anticipation for their new album builds with each release, and ‘Brand New Start’ is a promising glimpse into what lies ahead for this resilient and talented ensemble.
