Emerging Newcastle band Roses in December have been building a reputation for themselves over the last 5 years as one of the most hotly anticipated alternative rock bands of recent years. Gaining praise from Radio One and BBC Introducing, they are back with new single ‘The Day That He Saw Red’, a discourse on toxic masculinity and based on real-life events.

‘The Day That He Saw Red’ begins with a few beats and a moment of crackling static before immersing us straight into a superbly gritty bass hook. Combined with a strong momentum of drums and chaotic guitar riffs, Roses in December quickly grab our attention and share a message with real immediacy and urgency. Their song has a constantly shifting tempo, depth, and its layers keep us alert and keenly listening. Despite their inspiration and their emotions of frustration and anger, ‘The Day That He Saw Red’ has an uplifting and overall euphoric feeling.

The vocals give it a contemporary and accessible quality while still building on the discord, and it culminates in a frenzied guitar solo, echoing early Smashing Pumpkins, and leaving our hearts racing until its climactic end.

‘The Day That He Saw Red’ is an ambitious and enthralling creation, and given that the band want to use this song as a “guiding light” in how they want to redefine their sound, we are sure they will continue to be one of the most exciting rising bands of the months ahead.
