North Florida band Once Great Estate have returned with their second studio album ‘Goodbye Cody Scarp’. Following their critically acclaimed debut, they have released a flurry of much-loved singles in recent months, a string of live shows across the southeast of the US, as well as building a dedicated fan base.
‘Goodbye Cody Scarp’ begins with the longing instrumental of ‘Ghosts’, and is instantly recognisable with Tracy Horenbeins gorgeously silky yet raspy edged vocals. The bending guitar riffs combined with the violins melodies makes for a sincere and yearning album opener.
While title-track ‘Goodbye Cody Scarp’ sits as the album’s standout offering, with bending blues guitar riffs which brings a modernity and progressive attitude to their direction.
‘Astronaut’ is a refreshing middle point to the record, fusing more contemporary elements with their folky traditional influences. Brimming with thoughtful lyrics and a killer guitar solo to boot, they are certainly looking to turn some heads with this one.
‘Right outside your door’, the first single from the album, has already received much praise for its magical and haunting quality. And while it may not be our personal favourite here, it certainly gives a strong and confident introduction to what this new record is all about.
Once Great Estate have developed a distinctive and well defined sound, being both innovative whilst also drawing inspiration from Americana. ‘Goodbye Cody Scarp’ has a familiar yet progressive quality to it, continuing to form an accomplished catalogue, and deserving of the reputation and high standing they have already risen to.
