Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in music?
So, for anyone who doesn’t know me, hi! I’m Alto Key, a British singer-songwriter and I guess my music journey really started when I posted a lot of music stuff online. From jingles to music challenges to my life in London, I’ve definitely come a long way with the content I make. But through it all, I’ve always remained authentic to myself, and posted honest little snippets from my life, whether that’s through videos or music.
Who are your biggest musical influences and how have they shaped your sound?
I love so many bands and artists of all sizes! But some of my go-tos are in the realms of Coldplay, Bon Iver, Sleeping At Last (saving you a long, long list here). I’m always inspired by my independent artist friends too! And I have my own sound, but I think all of them end up contributing to that in some way- usually in the melodic choices I make more than anything.
Was there a specific moment or experience that made you decide to pursue music seriously?
I always just did it because I loved it and I honestly didn’t even ever think I would be able to really make a career out of it. But the more people listened to my music, and the more everything grew, it made me realise that maybe it is possible. And here we are today, about 7 years into my career and still going!
Can you walk us through your typical songwriting process? How do you find inspiration for your music and lyrics?
The best songs I write always come from just living my life, as basic as that might sound. I usually create playlists of a bunch of songs I love and think “how would I make a song like that?” and then combine it with some thoughts and feelings I’m going through at that time. Above all, I always want the message to be meaningful and something I would want to hear as a music fan.
What themes or messages do you hope listeners take away from your music?
Particularly with the latest songs I’m writing I’m really trying to remind people that there is positivity and beauty in the world, and to just keep holding on. I always write music with messages that I’d want to hear too, and I guess I’ve been needing that reassurance with the state of the world right now.
What challenges have you faced as an emerging artist in the music industry?
We live in this amazing time that the barrier to entry for a music career has been lowered, with less gatekeepers. But, with that, it also means everything’s become more saturated. So now, more than ever, it’s really hard to stand out and reach fans and listeners. Ultimately, that’s all I want, for the people who want my music to be able to listen to it, but it can be pretty tough sometimes to do that.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your musical journey so far?
I’ve had achievements here and there in music industry terms (which I’m grateful for!) but, honestly, the most satisfaction I get is when a fan reaches out to tell me how a song helped them or how they’ve really connected with a piece of music I’ve made.
How do you stay true to yourself and your artistry in a constantly evolving industry?
When everyone in the music industry has a unique perspective, the only thing I can do is believe in my own vision. Don’t get me wrong, I try to take feedback on board and I’m always learning, but I also try not to let other people stop me from doing what I’m passionate about and what best represents the real me with my artistry.
What can fans expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or tours?
My latest single ‘how lucky i am’ is just one track coming out on my full EP 3rd October! Other than that, a bunch of writing with other artists and thinking about what my next body of work is going to be (already!).
Where do you see yourself and your music career in the next five years?
I’m passionate about songwriting so I see myself doing that more and more throughout my music career. But, who knows? All it takes is one song to blow up for my artist project! Let’s see what happens!
