Ever since she first arrived, fast-rising artist Rumia has always looked to add a broader and more emotive presence than many of her peers. And with her eagerly-awaited sophomore album ‘Old Enough To Save Myself’ landing on the 4th April, she returns once again with her lofty new single ‘Role Model’.

So with the new track available to stream now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and where she is planning to take her sound next.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in music?

I’ve always loved singing. But it wasn’t until I turned sixteen and picked up a guitar that everything shifted. Suddenly, I wasn’t just singing other people’s songs, I was starting to shape my own voice, both musically and emotionally.

Who are your biggest musical influences and how have they shaped your sound?

Radiohead. Through them, I discovered genres I hadn’t explored before. I was especially drawn to their songs with strong, pulsing rhythms, and that instinct naturally pulled me toward trip hop. It felt like a space where I could blend atmosphere with emotion, texture with beat.

Was there a specific moment or experience that made you decide to pursue music seriously?

If I’m honest, I can’t point to a single moment, I think it was more like a quiet build-up of many little ones. But I do remember the feeling every time I listened to music that moved me, I’d get chills thinking that maybe one day, I could do the same for someone else.

Can you walk us through your typical songwriting process?

It’s a process that keeps evolving. Some days I pick up the guitar because there’s something inside me I need to let out. Other times, I start with a beat and just let myself improvise, following the emotion wherever it takes me.

How do you find inspiration for your music and lyrics?

My inspiration always comes from personal experience. I usually don’t write unless it’s coming from something real, a true feeling or moment I’ve lived

What themes or messages do you hope listeners take away from your music?

I think the main message is that it’s okay to feel deeply, to feel sad, lost, or desperate sometimes. You’re not the only one. We all go through it, and there’s something healing in knowing that.

What challenges have you faced as an emerging artist in the music industry?

One of the biggest challenges has been simply being heard. Cutting through the noise when there’s so much music being released every day. I’ve also learned that connections can make a huge difference in this industry. Talent matters, of course, but access and visibility often come down to who you know

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your musical journey so far?

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been playing outside of my home country, especially in places as far away as South Korea. The idea that my songs could travel further than I ever imagined is incredibly moving

How do you stay true to yourself and your artistry in a constantly evolving industry?

I try really hard not to do anything I don’t feel connected to, even though that’s not always easy. There are so many opinions coming at you all the time, and it’s tempting to bend, especially when people tell you it’s the only way to ‘make it’.

What can fans expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or tours?

I’m releasing my new album on April 4th, and heading out on tour through Spain, Portugal, and Germany during April and May! So exciting!

Where do you see yourself and your music career in the next five years?

I hope I’m still writing albums and going on tour — hopefully even further away!
