After 45 years of cryptic lore and cult fascination, avant-garde pioneers The Residents have announced a historic live tour celebrating their 1979 conceptual opus Eskimo. Launching January 8th in Vancouver, BC, the “Eskimo Live! Tour”will bring the enigmatic collective to 12 North American cities in early 2026, offering fans a long-awaited, immersive interpretation of one of the most mysterious records in experimental music history.
For the first time ever, Eskimo will be performed in full — reimagined as a theatrical ritual complete with narration, characters, and staging designed to expand on the surrealist mythology that has long surrounded the project. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 3rd at 10am local time.
Originally released in 1979, Eskimo was a bold departure from anything else in music at the time. Forgoing traditional song structures and lyrics, The Residents constructed a fictional sonic landscape of imagined Inuit rituals and glacial sonic experiments. Beneath its absurdist surface, Eskimo offered sharp satire of Western colonialism, cultural appropriation, and the artifice of anthropology — using bone-chilling drones, chants, and noise collages to craft an experience both alien and deeply human.
Critics and cult fans alike quickly hailed Eskimo as a landmark achievement. “Without doubt one of the most important albums ever made,” wrote NME’s Andy Gill — yet the album remained unperformed live for decades, its mystique preserved through silence.
That changes now.
