Over these last few years, emerging artist Carey Clayton has already proven he isn’t one to do things by halves. Creating some beautifully spellbinding aesthetics with a breadth of dazzling releases in recent years, his career has already set him up as one of the more enigmatic names around today. Explorative and innovative in equal measure, his latest venture sees him take on the concept release as he delivers the mesmerising new album ‘Headless’, dubbed “a kaleidoscopic ever-shifting musical landscape”.

Although as an artist that wears his influences very much on his sleeves, with notes of Radiohead and Unknown Mortal Orchestra permeating his latest material, ‘Headless’ is a far more tranquil and alluring listen than many would have expected. Building upon his already immersive direction in recent years, most notably the 2021 LP ‘gradually, suddenly’, this new endeavour feels far more explorative as it plays.

Musing on insights and perspectives from mediation and mindfuless practice, he aims to deliver this beautifully tranquil record that ebbs and flows with a subtle elegance throughout. Blending a casual medley of dream-pop, psych-rock, and neo-soul under one roof, ‘Headless’ creates this incredibly warm and alluring feeling, making for one of the more enchanting albums we have heard so far this year.

Carey Clayton has always maintained this fresh and immersive appeal to his work, but ‘Headless’ is a stark separation from what he has showcased in previous years. Completely unique and distinctive to himself, he shines with vigour and beauty here, nurturing what has already been a dazzling run of form to date.
