Berlin’s gnomes have always had an affinity for small wonders and hidden worlds, but on ‘Microclimbs’, they transcend their folk-tinged roots and bloom into a lush, electric forest of sound. The four-track collection, crafted with producer Sam Hanlan and drummer Henry O’Loughlin at Famous Gold Watch Studios, is a daring reintroduction, one that trades hushed acoustic for something more mischievous.

While gnomes’ earlier material hummed with pastoral warmth, ‘Microclimbs’ buzzes with restless urban energy. Electric guitars ripple through each track, mingling with warped Wurli synth lines and layered harmonies that feel like fleeting thoughts at twilight. It’s an unexpected move for an act once content in the garden, yet it feels like a natural evolution, leaning into the contradictions of modern life rather than shying away.

gnomes wander into lyrical reflections on solitude and the quiet ache of contemporary overwhelm, yet they never wallow. Instead, there’s a buoyancy here, a sly wink behind every melancholic verse. It’s the sound of an outfit that knows how to find a private patch of sun even when the clouds loom.

The EP owes subtle nods to the likes of Elliott Smith and Aldous Harding, but rather than imitation, it feels like a dream shared in fragments, at times off-kilter but always deeply felt.

As gnomes prepare to share these new songs live during Berlin’s FĂŞte de la Musique, they’re clearly stepping into a more electrified, adventurous chapter. ‘Microclimbs’ is a heartfelt leap into unexplored micro-worlds, each shimmering with hidden details for those willing to listen closely. For anyone craving music that balances vulnerability and fearless experimentation, gnomes have delivered something quietly transformative.
