COMMUNIST SEX MAGIC sound like a band with very little interest in pretending everything is fine. Their debut album ‘What A Charming Life’ is rooted in frustration, alienation and a growing distrust of the world around them, but what makes the record work is the fact that it never stops at anger.
Across twelve tracks, the Liverpool band frame social and personal collapse as part of the same process. The record follows someone gradually shedding an older understanding of himself as the certainties he once relied on begin to fall apart. Hatred, greed and pride become symptoms of a wider cultural sickness, but the album’s real concern is what happens internally when you can no longer ignore any of it.
It’s an idea that gives ‘What A Charming Life’ more emotional range than its abrasive exterior might initially suggest. There’s plenty of distortion, feedback and lo-fi murk, but beneath the noise sit songs about grief, vulnerability and the difficult act of learning to live with knowledge you cannot undo.
Musically, COMMUNIST SEX MAGIC draw from shoegaze, alt-rock and more confrontational aesthetics. Guitars blur into thick walls of sound, melodies surface briefly before being swallowed again, and the production deliberately leaves rough edges intact.
There’s also an obvious frustration with nostalgia, particularly within Liverpool’s heavily mythologised musical landscape. But COMMUNIST SEX MAGIC seem determined to build something that feels tied to the present moment, however uncomfortable that moment may be.
The album’s conclusion is where its outlook becomes most interesting. ‘What A Charming Life’ doesn’t suddenly discover optimism, nor does it collapse into nihilism. It arrives at something closer to acceptance: the idea that meaning can still exist even when certainty does not.
Uncomfortable, thoughtful and deliberately unrefined, ‘What A Charming Life’ is a strong debut from COMMUNIST SEX MAGIC. Its greatest strength is not the noise itself, but the sense that something vulnerable is always trying to break through it.
