For a debut release, ‘Scenes from a Well Worn Path – Side One’ feels remarkably assured. Music by Jeremy arrives with none of the hesitancy that often surrounds a first solo release, instead presenting a body of work that sounds like the product of years spent thinking, listening, living and waiting for the right moment to finally let everything out.
As it plays, the artist at the helm moves freely between folk, indie-pop, soul, post-punk, blues and more experimental ideas, yet it never feels scattered. His writing holds everything together, driven by curiosity, emotional honesty and a willingness to tackle subjects far beyond the usual singer-songwriter terrain.
Lead single ‘Be Me’ is an especially strong example of this concept. Bright, immediate and melodically sharp, the track turns the exhaustion of constantly performing a version of yourself for others into something genuinely uplifting. It has the kind of chorus that lands quickly, but there is real depth underneath, with Jeremy balancing self-examination against a sense of release.
The production is equally ambitious. Working independently from a home studio, he handles guitar and fretless bass himself while using AI-assisted tools to extend the arrangements and realise parts that would otherwise require a full band. It’s an idea that ultimately serves the songwriting and allows him to craft his true vision in the process.
But what stands out most is how alive this whole project feels. There’s an imagination to the arrangements, intelligence in the lyrics, and a refreshing refusal to simplify the collection into one obvious style.
As the first instalment of a sprawling 24-track double album, ‘Scenes from a Well Worn Path – Side One’ is a hugely promising opening chapter. Warm, thoughtful, inventive and full of personality, it introduces Music by Jeremy as an artist with a great deal to say and, crucially, a compelling way of saying it.
