There’s a scruffy, darkly comic charm running through Underachiever & The Letdowns’s new outing ‘Adventures In Disappointment’. Built from fragments of Dublin life, social unease and an apparently endless supply of strange characters, the record feels like a collection of overheard stories filtered through a deliberately warped imagination.
Its world is populated by broken flats, after-work pints, addiction, isolation, bad decisions and people barely holding themselves together, but the album rarely treats any of it with straight-faced misery. Instead, humour keeps cutting through the gloom, giving the record much of its personality and allowing bleak subject matter to coexist with absurdity without trivialising either.
But the writing is at its best when it focuses on the small details. The duo seem fascinated by the unnoticed corners of ordinary life, and the sort of scenes that might otherwise pass without comment but become strangely memorable once pushed slightly out of shape. Here, Dublin becomes part of the albumâs voice, lending the songs a particular social texture and sense of place.
There’s also a pleasing refusal to tidy everything into one clear emotional perspective. The record can move from loneliness and addiction into surreal comedy with little warning, giving it the feel of a mind constantly changing channels.
More than anything, ‘Adventures In Disappointment’ feels committed to character by finding value in mess, contradiction and the ridiculous ways people cope with disappointment.
Funny, grubby and unexpectedly perceptive, ‘Adventures In Disappointment’ turns everyday failure into something worth listening closely to. Underachiever & The Letdowns may present themselves as losers, but there’s far too much wit and imagination here for the joke to land quite that simply.
