Celeste Marie Wilson has found rich territory in the space between the honky-tonk and the church pew. And on her latest anthem ‘Jesus, Tequila, and Whiskey’, the East Texas singer-songwriter takes aim at the contradictions of small-town morality, delivering a sharp piece of Southern storytelling that manages to be funny, pointed and affectionate all at once.
The premise is immediately familiar. Saturday night brings drinking, gambling, arguments and questionable choices; Sunday morning arrives with respectable clothes and a fresh declaration of virtue. Here, she doesn’t need to invent larger-than-life villains because the everyday inconsistencies provide more than enough material.
That gives ‘Jesus, Tequila, and Whiskey’ some of the narrative spirit of classic country story-songs such as ‘Harper Valley P.T.A.’, but she brings the idea into a more contemporary setting. Her criticism is aimed less at faith itself than at the distance between public morality and private behaviour, and that distinction prevents the song from becoming a one-note attack.
Her own background in Southern rock, pop and jazz gives the track room to carry swagger alongside its humour, while her commanding vocal delivery lends the observations enough authority to make the punchlines land. There’s mischief in the writing, but beneath it sits a genuine frustration with people who demand standards from others that they seem unwilling to follow themselves.
The accompanying video makes the argument even clearer. Set inside a lively honky-tonk, it follows one supposedly righteous character through a night of drinking, gambling and fighting before depositing him in a confession booth the following morning. His casual attitude towards doing it all again gives the ending an appropriately dry sting.
Witty, colourful and delivered with plenty of Southern attitude, ‘Jesus, Tequila, and Whiskey’ gives Celeste Marie Wilson a strong vehicle for her storytelling instincts, and proves she can make a serious point without taking all the fun out of getting there.
