With his latest outing ‘Prey’, Mexican indie provocateur MAUMAUMAU delivers his boldest and most unsettling statement yet, offering a fever dream of lust, fear, and introspection that slinks through the shadows of modern nightlife. Following the much-loved anthems ‘Macho Macho’ and ‘Boss Level’, the track trades in the bright flirtation of pop for a dark, pulsing confession that explores the blurred line between wanting and warning.

From the first beat, ‘Prey’ feels like stepping into a club that’s half sanctuary, half trap. The synths glimmer like neon on wet pavement, the bass snarls from below, and MAUMAUMAU’s voice drips with both seduction and unease. It’s about power, imbalance, and the dangerous theatre that unfolds when boundaries dissolve. Inspired by real stories of predatory behaviour and emotional manipulation, ‘Prey’ refuses to look away. Instead, it forces us to sit with discomfort, while examining complicity and craving in equal measure.

There’s a cinematic quality to the production, shaped by Fernando Familiar and Reed Izumi, that keeps the song constantly shifting shape. One moment it’s intoxicatingly smooth, the next it’s fractured and anxious, echoing the duality at its core. It’s easy to see why MAUMAUMAU describes it as a “trip”, where every turn feels like another room in a haunted house of human desire.

Across a string of releases this year, MAUMAUMAU has proven himself a master of transformation, and ‘Prey’ cements that reputation. It’s the sound of an artist unafraid to confront darkness, crafting something seductive, unnerving, and impossible to forget.
