There’s a compelling contradiction at the centre of ‘PROMISES’. Created within the close confines of a Vancouver bedroom, CRYSOFTLY’s new EP carries ambitions that stretch far beyond those walls. The project is intimate in construction but expansive in intent, bringing melodic rap into contact with jersey club rhythms, seductive drill textures and the polished emotional drama of modern alternative R&B.
Right from the start, ‘PROMISES’ introduces an emerging artist determined to do more than simply reproduce the dominant sounds of contemporary rap. CRYSOFTLY clearly understands the melodic language popularised by figures such as Drake, Kanye West and The Weeknd, but treats those influences as starting points rather than restrictions. The EP’s real energy comes from the attempt to reshape that foundation through newer, more rhythmically restless movements.
At the centre of the EP is ‘MISSIONARY’, the track the artist recognised as exceptional from the moment it was recorded. Artists often spend so long refining material that they can lose sight of the initial emotional spark, but ‘MISSIONARY’ appears to have arrived with its identity already intact. CRYSOFTLY’s confidence in the song suggests a moment when creative intention, performance and production aligned without needing explanation.
But what makes ‘PROMISES’ particularly exciting is the level of creative ownership behind it. CRYSOFTLY recorded the entire EP in a bedroom and personally completed the mixing process. And that autonomy also gives the EP a sense of proximity. Even when the production gestures towards arena-sized influences and current rap movements, the project originates from a deeply personal process. Where there is no large studio or extensive technical team separating the artist from the final result.
The involvement of producers This is AL and JOHANMOBU provides CRYSOFTLY with different environments in which to experiment. This allows the EP to become collaborative without losing its centre, unified by the voice and ambition guiding both halves.
With this new collection, CRYSOFTLY delivers a confident and forward-looking statement from the edges of Vancouver’s emerging rap landscape. Driven by sharp production partnerships and complete creative involvement, the EP captures an artist beginning to define not only where melodic rap currently stands, but where it might travel next.
