‘Over’ is built from very little, but it carries a considerable amount. With acoustic guitar, a restrained vocal and little decorative production, Orit Shimoni creates a song that relies almost entirely on observation, phrasing and the emotional weight of repetition.

Written in response to the pandemic era, the track reflects the strange coexistence of division and solidarity that became increasingly visible during lockdown. Public life seemed to grow harsher and more suspicious, yet people also found inventive ways to support one another, maintain relationships and create a sense of community despite physical separation.

Throughout the release, cruelty and generosity are presented as forces that continue to exist side by side. The repeated sense of things happening “over and over” carries both recognition and weariness. There’s some comfort in understanding that conflict is not new, but also frustration at how rarely people appear willing to learn from it.

The sparse arrangement suits this outlook. A fuller production might have pushed the song towards a more conventional protest anthem, but the artist’s restraint keeps it personal throughout. Her voice remains calm and conversational, giving the impression of someone thinking aloud rather than delivering a fixed verdict.

Her long history as an independent touring artist adds weight to that concern with connection. Across more than two decades on the road, she has built her work around the direct exchange between performer and audience. Her music draws from folk, soul, rock, Motown and protest traditions, but the guiding principle remains a simple voice, instrument and room willing to listen.

Instead of offering easy reassurance, Orit Shimoni finds a quieter form of hope in the continued possibility of empathy. ‘Over’ acknowledges how exhausting the cycle can be, but it doesn’t entirely surrender to it. The song remains open to the idea that people can still choose differently, even when history suggests how difficult that choice may be.
